Dr Stephen Herman, z”l

Rabbi Dr Charles Middleburgh, Dean of Leo Baeck College, writes:

On behalf of our Principal, Rabbi Dr Deborah Kahn-Harris, it is with feelings of personal and professional grief and loss that I must inform you of the death, last Thursday, of our peerless Chair of Governors, Dr Stephen Herman.

Steve cared passionately about Leo Baeck College, he understood it and valued it and did everything he could to support it, and he instigated several essential initiatives concerning its governance.

We mourn his incalculable loss, but acknowledge that our grief is only a tiny  reflection of that felt by his wife Judi, his children Jess and Ed, and his grandchildren Alys, Dylan, and Myla. Steve had a gentle voice and manner, but he showed real determination and steel when it was needed; and he cared for the College so deeply that even when he was in hospital having chemo he was reading papers and sending emails.

All of us will strive to be true to his memory.

Zikhrono livrachah.
