The Torah parashah Ki Tavo contains a strange paradox. It begins with the words, “When you enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you as a heritage, and you possess it and settle it….” It then goes on to give instructions about bringing the first fruits of the soil at each harvest to Jerusalem and offering them to God as a token of thanksgiving.
