Course Description:

This course is the continuation of B1-B9 courses but new students are welcome.

Biography:

Liat has been teaching Ivrit for many years in many different contexts, including the World Zionist Organization, the London Jewish Community Centre (JW3) and various synagogue communities.

Testimonials:

‘’Liat is an excellent teacher and ensured that all of us were working at our own levels. The small group made it possible to practice spoken Hebrew with each other. I enjoyed learning with the group.’’

”The rapport between the students, the pace of learning and the teaching methods of the tutor are excellent.”

”First of all, the fact that it was available on-line! When I found that the LBC Lehrhaus programme was offering weekly online classes in Hebrew for beginners, I had to give it a go, especially as I had had such a positive experience with an online Lehrhaus course in the autumn. As always with these courses, the teacher is the vital element. Liat has been fabulous. Her approach is interesting in that she uses a text that allows us to move forward each week while also revisiting and hopefully consolidating previous learning. She was also encouraging and supportive but focused. I also enjoyed the sense of ‘group-ness’ that Liat created with us. Within a few weeks, the group felt like a safe, supportive space in which to get things wrong and try things out. The creation of a WhatsApp group was a great idea and may have contributed to that sense of group-ness as we exchanged messages in Hebrew, teased each other and did quite an amount of laughing.”

Course Description:

Sholem aleykhem! An opportunity to learn Yiddish!

People start learning Yiddish for many reasons. For some, it is to connect with the mame loshn of relatives. For others, it is to understand the best Yiddish jokes and curses, to learn the lyrics of ballads or to read the original stories of Tevye the Dairyman. The language is, however, a golden key with which to unlock the treasures of a civilisation spread over a thousand years and across the whole world. In this online course you will be guided into the language, gaining access to some of these treasures for yourself.

This 8 week course is for students with no prior knowledge of Yiddish. Each session will be split between conversation, grammar and exploring certain gems of Yiddish culture, including poems, stories and songs. No textbook is required, but the ability to read the alef-beys (the Hebrew alphabet) is essential. Resources will be sent to students before sessions, and homework will be set each week.

Biography:

I’m Osian (pronounced: Osh’n) Evans Sharma. I was born in London and raised in Norwich. I came back to study at King’s College London and later graduated with a Master’s degree in Jewish Studies at University College London. I am first and foremost an enthusiast in Yiddish Studies. I have taught Yiddish at the Jewish Music Institute’s annual Ot Azoy course, and hope to take and make use of the language in further research.
