Morning Lehrhaus online course

This short, illustrated course will open by asking what we might mean by the phrase ‘Jewish art’. Is it a body of work defined and governed by the biblical Second Commandment’s proscription of idolatrous images? Or should the term ‘Jewish art’ be rejected as an empty classification of a body of work that has no definitively and exclusively Jewish historical, religious, and stylistic characteristics?

The group will be invited to consider how ancient and modern Jewish thinkers’ ways of stopping images turning into idols might be of use in our own image-saturated twenty-first century.
