Hidden Treasures
The LBC Library collections have been included on Hidden Treasures – A Celebration of British Jewish Archives. This is a wonderful project providing an online platform to support and promote archives and Anglo-Jewish history and culture. As well as our books, the Library has archival collections including documents, photographs and letters recording the thinking and practices of rabbis, scholars, musicians and teachers who have had an impact on Jewish life. Follow Hidden Treasures and LBC on social media to find out more, or visit our web pages.
Volunteers
A big thank you to all our volunteers who are working hard to support our readers and care for our collections. Each volunteer has their own special project, including researching lectures by Leo Baeck, cataloguing German rare books and making protective cases for fragile volumes. All our volunteers are also working on a huge project to add barcodes to our books to make the collection easier to manage and use. We couldn’t do it without them!
If you are interested in volunteering at the library in 2025 please get in touch with the library team library@lbc.ac.uk
Library of Lost Books
For the LBC Library’s third Library of Lost Book Workshop, students, faculty, friends and researchers came together to search for books originally belonging to the library of the Hochschule, the progressive Jewish seminary in Berlin, who’s library was stolen by the Nazis and scattered around the globe. Every book found rejoins its fellows in a dynamic virtual library, a moving reunification made possible by digital technology, harnessing the tools of the twentyfirst century to take action against a wartime injustice.
LBC Senior Librarian Cassy Sachar describes the provenance workshop as “deeply moving…to be following the work of the Allies at the end of the Second World War, seeking traces of ownership in books looted from Jewish libraries and homes. And to be sharing this remarkable story of survival with a new generation.” You too can explore the virtual library and see the work of citizen scientists around the globe online here. Or come and be part of the story and visit our Hochschule books at LBC library. To see the books in person please get in touch library@lbc.ac.uk
