Rabbi Henry G. Brandt z”l 1927-2022
Rabbi Dr Charles Middleburgh, Dean of Leo Baeck College, writes:
Barukh Dayan HaEmet
It is with much sadness that we learned yesterday of the death of our alumnus, one of Leo Baeck College’s first graduates, Henry Brandt.
Born in Munich as Heinz Brandt, his family escaped from Germany to England in 1939, and later Brandt went to Israel where he served in the Haganah. Back in the UK he studied economics at Queens University in Belfast and later for the rabbinate at Leo Baeck College London. He was ordained in 1961 at Leo Baeck College, and served as Rabbi in congregations in England, Switzerland, Sweden and since the 80s in “Einheitsgemeinden” in Germany. For the last few years he lived in Switzerland. He was a well known and much respected voice in interfaith-dialogue in Germany and was honoured with the Federal Cross of Merit. He passed away yesterday aged 94 and the funeral is being held in Munich.
We extend our sincere condolences to Henry’s family.
Yehi zikhro barukh: May his memory be a blessing.
